A 20-year-old Shurugwi man has been sentenced to an 8-year prison term by the Gweru Magistrates’ Court following his conviction for attempting to rape a juvenile (14).
On August 26, 2025, at Chirasha area in Zhaugwe, Shurugwi, the offender proposed love to the victim who was on her way home. When she refused, the offender would have none of it and tripped her to the ground.
They wrestled as the offender tried to pull her skirt up. Passersby heard the victim screaming and approached the scene, and the offender fled.
The offender was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment; 7 years were suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offense for 5 years. He will serve an effective 8 years.
In light of this case, the National Prosecuting Authority has urged communities to be vigilant against child sexual abuse saying, “Every child has the right to protection and a safe environment.”
