The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection have issued a weather advisory, warning of a period of intense storms set to affect the entire country from Tuesday, 20 January, through Saturday, 24 January 2026.
The forecast predicts heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in places, accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and frequent lightning. The MSD attributes the severe conditions to a system of low pressures driving warm, moist air across Zimbabwe.
Authorities have highlighted several significant hazards for the public to watch out for, including flash flooding in flood-prone areas, river basins, and wetlands. The strong winds pose a risk of fallen trees, structural damage to rooftops, and dangerous road conditions.
In its advisory, the Department of Civil Protection urged citizens to take immediate precautionary steps. Key recommendations include securing rooftops and loose outdoor items, ensuring the safety of animals, and trimming loose branches before the storms arrive.
The public is strongly advised to avoid standing under trees or near tall poles during lightning, refrain from entering flooded areas, and stay away from open spaces and machinery, including tractors, when storms are active.
Regular updates on the evolving weather patterns can be found on the official MSD platforms. The public is encouraged to follow these channels and adhere to all safety directives from civil protection authorities.
